Continental Divide

Hike the historic route of the Continental Divide, which was re-routed from Emory Peak through Silver City in 2010. From Emory Pass Vista parking lot, there are two spectacular hikes to explore via Black Range Crest Trail #79.

Going northbound on the trail 5 miles takes you to the HIllsboro Peak lookout tower and cabin. From here you can feast your eyes on the expansiveness of the Gila Wilderness. The trail continues on and passes over McKnight Mountain (elev. 10,165 ft.), the highest peak in the Black Range, and eventually connects with the current Continental Divide trail near Reeds Peak. The latter half of this 27.7 miles trail takes you right through the heart of Aldo Leopold Wilderness.

The southbound trail offers a gentle hike along the crest of the Black Range through cool spruce, fir and aspen forests. It continues for 8.3 miles before terminating at Forest Road 886.
